So what's your choice...

Kinja'd!!!

would you rather:

spend $35,000 on a 1975 Datsun 280 2+2

(no, I didn't misplace the comma on the price)

-or-

save some money and buy the Ferrari 308 GTSi?

So the Ferrari is actually the sensible choice in this matchup?

welcome to Used Car Madness , where we find two used cars for sale on the interwebs and have them face-off. In our last edition we pitted a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Yeah, I'd say Ferrari in this case. I do love those old Datsuns but man, Italian cars are starting to grow on me.

I'm surprised to say it, but I'd probably get the Ferrari, mostly for the gated shifter.

I would buy la Ferrari, I like the 308 a lot.

yeah... both " 308 " and " gated shifter " are on my bucket list, so it'd be nice to kill two birds with one stone. or, er... prancing horse.

It would 100% depend on whether that Ferrari had it's maintenance done recently as some routine maintenance items on 308s are quite spendy "A major service, including the replacement of the two timing belts, is required every 30,000 miles or five years, a job that can cost $2,000 to $4,000." If that was done I'd be doing my best Magnum PI impression all day every day.

can't argue with ya - my 308 lust started a couple of years ago and hasn't diminished. plus, for us shmucks here in California the law requiring 1976+ cars to be smogged looks like it will fall in the next couple of years (or at least get adjusted to 1982 i believe) so there's something additional to hope for...

so no one has commented on the Datsun's $35k asking price? that seems quite astronomical, even for this nice example, especially when i was considering a similar 2+2 in very good condition a few months ago for $4,500?

plus, aren't the 2+2's not as popular as their solitary 2 brethren?

Ferrari. IMO the "3 series" ferraris are some of the best looking ferraris ever produced

LOL $35k for a Z, although it does baby better than the 308, but that's what the Mondial and 400i are for.

Easily the Ferrari in this case.

I am leaning towards the Z:

More reliable, more mod-able if I chose to.

Just as rare and right hand drive (RHD is one of my dreams to own)

Fender mounted mirrors, another strange dream of mine.

Although I like the 308, I think the Z is better looking and more practical. As long as the Z is 100% street legal I would go that route, but I question it since it was supposedly imported 26 years ago.

nobody had mentioned it, so I will. The By in prices may be similar, but actual costs will be much higher with the 308. Although the 308 is relatively thrifty when compared to typical Ferrari maintenance, expect to pay multitudes more in pretty much every aspect of driving the vehicle.

That Datsun is cool. RHD, non-US parking bench bumpers, Japanese ID plate. But thse items and 2+2 doesn't make for $35k.

Ferrari.

agree. i didn't initially realize it was RHD, so that gives it points. but not 35k points worth...
